How to Keep your Skin Healthy this Winter

January 20, 2018

This time of year is possibly the worst period for your skin - especially coming into January post Christmas! Keeping your skin healthy and happy over the winter months can be tough; flitting between heavily heated rooms and the biting cold outside air is not a good combination for maintaining healthy skin.

There are plenty of things you can do to prevent skin damage this winter; from picking a good moisturiser to undergoing gentle treatments to revitalise your skin. We’ve outlined a few bits of advice to follow throughout the winter to ensure your skin remains radiant and that you feel confident in it!

Invest in a Good Moisturiser

The moisturiser market is heavy saturated with many different types of moisturiser all promising to smooth out flaws whilst preventing acne. Unfortunately, as you’ll probably know from your own experiences, a lot of the time this isn’t the case! Look for vitamin E in a moisturiser as it’s rich in antioxidants which will help to defend the skin against external irritants such as pollution. Hyaluronic acid is also a fantastic ingredient that holds 1,000 times its own weight in moisture.

Try a Skin Peel

Here at Skin Radiance, we use glycolic skin peels which are low cost with very few side effects. Skin peels are a really fast acting treatment which remove dead skin cells and therefore encourage new skin cells to grow. As a result, skin is left looking more youthful, smoother and has an instant glow. Skin peels are very popular in winter for ridding your skin of dead cells that can block pores and cause irritation and acne.

Use Hydrating Cleansers instead of Face Wipes

During winter, your skin is stripped of hydration and moisture so it’s important to hydrate your skin in more ways than one during your skincare routine. Whilst moisturiser will help to put moisture back into your skin, face wipes can take it straight back out again as they strip your skin of its natural oils. Try using micellar water instead, or another reliable hydrating cleanser to keep that moisture locked in!

Exfoliate Regularly

If you add exfoliation into your weekly skincare regime, you should see quite a difference in the texture and appearance of your skin. By removing dead skin cells, acne and dullness can be reduced. This treatment can be used on the face and all over the body if you so wish and should be paired with a good moisturiser for balance!

Drink a lot of Water

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean that you can skip on your recommended daily amount of water! Water is key to the health and appearance of your skin and drinking a lot of it will help to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Fizzy drinks don’t count as hydration (they do more harm than good to skin!) - water is the only one that will do.

Choose a Natural Ingredient Based Foundation

Some ingredients in moisturisers are pretty horrifying, as is the damage they can do to your skin. As if finding the perfect foundation isn’t hard enough, we strongly recommend purchasing a foundation with natural ingredients to help care for your skin whilst you wear it. In our experience, Bare Minerals is a great place to start as all of their ingredients are natural and skin loving, but do your own research and find out what is best for you - no two skin types are really ever the same!

We hope this has been useful and that it will help you on your quest to keep your skin healthy this winter! If you’d like to book in for a skin peel, please get in contact now.
